Requirements to Run for Office

Requirements

To run for Mayor or a seat on the City Commission, an individual must be a resident of the City of Vernon and be qualified to hold the office in accordance with state law.

A candidate must be a citizen of the United States, 18 years old, and a resident of the City to be eligible to file for a place on the ballot.

Candidates by Place

Candidates for Mayor may reside anywhere within the corporate City limits of the City of Vernon.

Candidates for the City Council positions Place One and Place Three must reside in West Vernon as defined in the City of Vernon Charter, Section 9.6.

Candidates for City Council positions Place Two and Place Four must reside in East Vernon as defined in the City of Vernon Charter, Section 9.6.

All positions are elected at large.

Applying

An application for a place on the ballot must be filed with the City Secretary. Filing for the May 2, 2020 General Election begins January 15, 2020, and ends February 14, 2020.

A regular write-in candidate must file a declaration of write-in candidacy with the City Secretary. The deadline to file a declaration for the May 2, 2020 City of Vernon General Election February 18, 2020.
